A former England netball player is on a mission to ensure that all women can feel strong even when they go through menopause.

Ruth Sudol of Fixology in Leeds has launched MenoSmarts, a range of classes designed to optimise women’s health and physical fitness through perimenopause and beyond.

Physio, personal trainer and ex-international athlete Ruth said: “We’re often told weight training is the best form of exercise for perimenopause but a lot of women have never done it before and are intimidated or don’t know where to start.

“There is often unclear and contradictory information circulated around training and this is where Fixology has stepped in to provide smart and guided classes ensuring women can enjoy long-term results in an efficient way”.

  • Tendon and bone health – during perimenopause we can be prone to a reduction in bone density. Our Tendon and bone strengthening class is specifically designed to load your bones and tendons through weight-bearing and loaded exercises using body weight, dumbbells and TRX.

  • Brain and heart health – low impact HIT training is a cardio workout as well as weight training. This benefits your heart and brain.

  • Muscle mass – building muscle is more of a challenge in perimenopause. We need to be strong to be able to do our daily activities but muscle also has the benefit of increasing our metabolic rate and therefore fighting belly fat.

  • Our classes promote stress management – this is a BIG one! Managing stress is very important in perimenopause. Exercise can be a stressor but done in a smart way it’s extremely beneficial. This is important for hormone balance, including cortisol which causes belly fat. The next day after our classes women should feel invigorated, not like they have been run over by a bus.
